There currently is no cure for psoriasis, but there are multiple psoriasis treatments available that can usually lead to a clearing of symptoms. The goal of treatment is to stop the skin cell overgrowth that leads to plaque formation and inflammation.
Treatment options include topical medications, oral medications, lasers, and a new class of medications called "biologics."
At Chatham Skin and Cancer Center, we have a tremendous amount of experience in diagnosing and treating psoriasis.
Your doctor will recommend one or more of these treatments depending on the following factors:
Since some treatments work better for some patients than others, be prepared to try more than one treatment.
Biologics (also called "disease-modifying therapy" or "immunomodulators") are a relatively new treatment option for people with moderate to severe psoriasis. They are given this name because they are derived from human or animal proteins instead of chemicals like most other medications.
Biologics work by targeting specific parts of the immune system, such as T cells or TNF, a chemical used to transmit messages between immune cells. This focused approach reduces the likelihood of side effects seen with medications that affect the entire immune system.
Biologics must be administered by injection, either into the skin (subcutaneously), into the muscle (intramuscular or IM), or by intravenous infusion (IV). Subcutaneous injections are similar to the insulin shots used by someone with diabetes and can be administered by the person with psoriasis or a caregiver.
Some biologics may require long-term use to keep psoriasis under control. Stopping treatment can lead to a premature return of symptoms.
Currently, five biologic medications are FDA-approved for psoriasis:
What is the XTRAC Excimer Laser?
The XTRAC Excimer Laser is an exciting new treatment offered at Chatham Skin and Cancer Center - offering new hope to individuals suffering from psoriasis, and vitiligo.
The XTRAC system allows the physician to use a high-dose, focused beam of monochromatic UVB light right to the spot of the problem for fast, effective treatment while minimizing the risk of exposure to healthy skin.
Quick Facts on XTRAC Eximer Laser Treatment for Psoriasis Patients:
• Effective treatment — generally in 10-12 treatment sessions
• Long-lasting relief—typically several months free of symptoms
• Simple, painless treatment—sessions last only a few minutes
• Relief without messy creams and daily skin care regimen
• Covered by most major insurance companies
Who should consider using this treatment?
The XTRAC Excimer Laser is most effective in individuals with mild to moderate psoriasis who are unhappy with their current method of treatment or who have failed previous treatment options. This would include individuals who have tried topical treatments, oral medications, injections and traditional phototherapy and have areas which are not responding to those treatments.
What is an XTRAC Laser Treatment Session like?
The treatments are simple and performed our medical staff. On your initial visit, Dr. Gaughf will determine your optimal starting dose to each of the affected areas. The XTRAC Excimer Laser will then be held over these areas for treatment – this typically takes only a few minutes and requires no anesthesia. Most patients feel no pain or discomfort at all during these sessions other than an occasional warm sensation around the treatment site.
How long will a remission last?
While individual result may vary, most patients are able to obtain relief in just 10 to 12 treatment sessions. The average remission times experienced have been between 3.5 and 6 months. Numerous clinical studies have shown the dramatic difference that 308nm laser light can make in enhancing patient outcomes, reducing diseased areas and improving quality of life.
Will treatment be covered by insurance?
Most major insurance plans as well as Medicare cover the XTRAC Excimer laser treatment but the staff at Chatham Skin Care will check with your insurance company directly to see if this treatment is covered under your plan.
